A Commitment in Progress

Sustainability has become a key factor in how destinations are chosen for conferences, congresses, meetings, and incentives. In Porto and the North of Portugal, we recognise this responsibility and are actively working towards a more sustainable approach to business events.
Our path is not about claiming leadership or accomplishments, but about acknowledging that we are on a journey. A journey where sustainability means more than environmental care — it also includes social, cultural, and economic responsibility.

A Comprehensive Perspective

We believe that every event can create a positive impact. By encouraging organisers, venues, service providers, and local communities to collaborate, we aim to:

environmental

Reduce environmental footprint through smarter resource management and greener practices.

social

social

Promote social inclusion by engaging local communities and respecting their traditions.

economic

economic

Generate economic value that benefits not only the sector, but the wider region.

Initiatives in Place

Several steps are already being taken to integrate sustainability into the MICE sector:

Sustainability Movement

Engaging the tourism value chain around environmental, social, cultural, and economic dimensions.

“Ser Turismo Sustentável” programme:

Supporting companies in the adoption of more sustainable practices, based on real challenges identified through research.

Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC)

Membership with this international body reflects our commitment to aligning with recognised global standards.

Marketplace

A digital platform that helps tourism companies grow while integrating sustainable principles.

Examples from the Region

The destination is gradually moving towards more sustainable models. For example, around 70% of electricity in the region already comes from renewable sources such as hydro, solar, and wind power. Infrastructure across the territory is increasingly accessible and designed with long-term quality in mind.

These efforts reinforce the idea that Porto and the North is building the conditions to host events in a responsible and forward-looking way.

Resources for Event Planners

We are developing tools to help organisers plan more responsible events, including a Sustainability Guide for Events, which will soon be available for download.

This guide will provide practical recommendations and checklists for reducing environmental impact, engaging with local communities, and ensuring long-lasting positive legacies.
